Legacy of Rome: Introduces Retinues and the ability to restore the Roman Empire. Happens at least once every few playthroughs.) (F-always disabled unless I hate myself and want to see Europe burn. Sunset Invasion: Introduces the Aztec culture and religion, and introduces a game rule that dictates if/around when the Aztec will invade Europe. It's just what you should buy should really mostly depend on what you're looking to play, there's no need to throw money at it all at once. And all of the expansions are worth it (other than Sunset Invasion). I own every single DLC of CK2, even the music and portrait packs. I will try to describe them and assign them a criticality rating-how critical I find them to be for the enjoyment of a random playthrough that assumes I'll be playing a ruler that's the most relevant to the expansion. So other than content unlocks, there are several expansions that enhance the base game. If you want to play nomads, you'll need Horse Lords. If you want to play India, you'll need the Rajas of India. If you want to play Christians, you're good to go, but Holy Fury will go a long way. If you want to play Muslims, you're going to need Sword of Islam. However, each religious or cultural group have some kind of expansion that either unlocks it or enhances it. CK2 is pretty good in the sense that core mechanics that the game is balanced around are generally speaking in the base game. It's hard to really pin down what is essential and what is not.
